What is a Backlink?
A backlink is simply a link to your website from another site. The term backlink is a short phrase for a website linking back to yours.
When another website links to you - from a blog, article, or somewhere on their website - search engines spiders pick up the link and include it in their index. As more sites link to your domain, search engines are more likely to crawl your website, rank you better for related terms, and generally give your site more authority in their algorithms.
Why Keep Track of Backlinks?
The number of links to your website can be an indicator of the authority your site has, its performance in search engines, and how popular it is in general on the World Wide Web.
Every search engine handles backlinks a little differently. For example, Google reports only on a select handful of links that are considered to be permanent backlinks. However, Yahoo! tends to report on the actual number of links to your website, without filtering the results as much. For this reason, Yahoo can be a more accurate indicator of how many actual backlinks your website has at any given time.
The Backlink Checker Tool retrieves the number of backlinks as reported by Yahoo, and when combined with other search metrics, can be a very useful indicator of a site's general popularity and the growth of backlinks over time.
